Atlanta Water Harvest: An Understanding of Conservation

ATLANTA WATER CONSERVATION, Part 2
"When is enough... enough?" Choosing a storage tank.

You don't need to look far to find information (usually the gloom and doom) about the water crisis in Atlanta. The newspapers, television, radio - statewide and even nationwide - have some "spin" to the problem. However, the real problem, more times than not, is that we hear very few real, practical and long-term solutions being offered to Metro-Atlanta residents and property owners. The fact is, there may not be any immediate solutions that will solve the big problems, but there is a solution for individual home and property owners. Surprisingly, the solution is not only long-term, but long-proven. Rainwater harvesting has been practiced for thousands of years all over the world.

When it comes to taking advantage of rainwater harvesting, don’t only be guided by cost - make sure you install a system which suits the way you live. If you are into aesthetics - get a system which suits your "real needs". If you only have a small area you want to irrigate - look for systems with the capacity to suit your particular landscape.

It is important to calculate just how much you can harvest from your property. Then you need to decide what you will use your collected water for. Finally, be sure to design the system to meet those needs. If you prefer to water your property with a watering can, plan accordingly. If you have an existing irrigation system (or one that can be modified to be more efficient) your system design will be different.

As populations grow, water shortages occur more and more frequently, and restrictions on water usage will probably increase in equal measure.

Saving rain water saves money and helps the environment. The more harvested rainwater is used, the less the need to use chlorinated or other chemically treated tap water.

The more we use collected rainwater, the less will go into storm drains and sewers where it is mixed with oil and other toxic residues from streets, parking lots etc.

And, the more individual property owners harvest their rainwater, the less a need there is for costly municipal processing of water.

Rainwater Harvesting reduces household water consumption and is the most efficient water solution. Runoff from the roof to the tank is immediate and efficient, whereas runoff in vegetated dam catchments requires significant rainfall to impact on dam levels.

It is possible to simply take control of your water "problem" and with very positive results.

Water conservation is not about using less... true conservation is about using what we have available wisely.
